Coronavirus FAQ

How Does This Coronavirus Spread? The coronavirus spreads in air droplets when someone coughs or sneezes. That means people within 5 or 6 feet of an infected person would be the most likely to get sick—when those viral particles land on a mucus membrane like your eye. Such viruses can also spread when people touch a surface contaminated with infectious droplets, then touch their own nose, mouth, or eyes.

What Are the Symptoms? There have been a wide range of symptoms so far, ranging from mild to severe. In most cases, people have had a fever and dry cough. In the more severe cases, people have developed pneumonia and shortness of breath. In a small percentage of cases, the disease has been fatal. Most people who fall ill recover within two weeks. People with more severe cases generally recover in three to six weeks.

How Can I Protect Myself?  Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette – cover your nose and mouth if you cough or sneeze. Cough or sneeze into the bend of your elbow instead of your hands. Avoid sick people and try to stay home when you are sick. Frequently washing your hands has been proven to help slow the spread of viruses such as this. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and for at least 20 seconds. In a pinch, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol will work, however washing your hands is the preferred method.  Unfortunately, the CDC has stated face masks will not help prevent you from contracting this virus.

Our staff will continue to monitor the updates on the coronavirus as it applies to Northwest Arkansas. We will post applicable details on this evolving situation on our social media platforms and website.
